Underwriting Tightens for Pizza Delivery

Crittenden expects increased underwriting scrutiny of pizza delivery drivers due to problems related to distracted driving and the high severity nature of this class. The class has relatively low frequency, but any incident typically includes expensive bodily injury losses from pedestrians and motorcycles. Demand for pizza delivery is rising, and many pizzerias are beginning to offer delivery service as Americans’ dining preferences move toward takeout and delivery rather than dining in restaurants. About 93 percent of Americans eat the equivalent of one pizza each month, and the $40 billion pizza industry makes up about 17 percent of restaurants nationwide. Pizzerias will continue to open at a record-breaking pace this year; the industry has so far grown by about 13 percent each year since 2011.

Expanding exposures may keep some new markets out of this segment. Inner-city pizza shops increasingly use bicycle and scooter delivery while golf carts are used in areas near military bases. Some pizzerias are experimenting with drone technology and other alternative delivery methods. These methods aren’t covered under the usual commercial auto policy and are typically deemed mobile equipment under general liability. An increase in wage and hour claims may also keep some carriers out of this segment. (6/9/14)
